Electrical Test & Tag Services by Hawks Facilities Management

Damaged leads and faulty appliances are one of the most common electrical hazards at work. Test and tag is the routine process of inspecting and testing portable electrical equipment and labelling each item with its test result and next due date.

Hawks Facilities Management provides test and tag for workplaces across Wollongong, the Illawarra and the Shoalhaven, with testing carried out in line with AS/NZS 3760.

What is included

  • Visual inspection of plugs, leads and casings
  • Electrical testing with a portable appliance tester
  • Durable tag on every item showing test date and next due date
  • Extension leads, power boards and portable tools
  • Office equipment, kitchen appliances and chargers
  • Failed items identified and tagged out of service
  • Itemised asset register and test report
  • Reminders when your next round is due

How often does equipment need testing?

Intervals depend on the environment the equipment is used in. As a guide under AS/NZS 3760, equipment in factories and workshops is commonly tested every six months, while equipment in a low-risk office may be on a twelve-month or longer cycle. Construction and demolition sites follow a separate standard with three-monthly testing.

We will look at your workplace and recommend intervals for each area, then keep track of the dates for you.

Minimal disruption

Testing an item takes a few minutes and we work around your team, desk by desk or area by area. For sites that cannot have equipment unplugged during the day, testing can be arranged outside business hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is test and tag a legal requirement?

Work health and safety law requires a business to make sure electrical equipment is safe. Regular inspection and testing is specifically required for equipment used in higher-risk conditions, and testing to AS/NZS 3760 is the accepted way to show equipment has been checked.

What happens if an item fails?

It is labelled as failed, removed from service and listed in your report so you can repair or replace it.

Do I get a record of the testing?

Yes. You receive an asset register listing each item tested, the result and the next test due date.

Can new equipment be used without a tag?

New equipment is generally considered safe when supplied, but it should be visually checked and added to your register so it is included in the next round.
